Kim is a 54 year old disabled woman who has had to struggle her whole life with a debilitating condition called Muscular Dystrophy. She has had to endure teasing and bullying from classmates and the nursing profession. After being first diagnosed at age 6, Kim spent many days going to the Paediatrics department at the Royal Newcastle Hospital where she was subjected to several blood tests, photos of her large calf muscles and a stay in hospital where the doctors did a biopsy on one of Kim’s legs.

On the home front, Kim had to endure her father’s alcoholism and her older brother’s jealousy. In spite of all of this, Kim found faith in God at 17 years of age which helped her accept her disability and face the challenges of living day to day. Challenges that included school, home, losing her mother and father.

After losing her mother to pancreatic cancer in 2008, Kim entered into an Aged Care facility in the Newcastle suburb of Wallsend where she endured bullying by some of the nursing staff for 7 years.

In 2016, Kim was handed the opportunity of being a participant in the Summer Foundation’s Housing Project in the seaside suburb of Belmont where she would be living an independent life. Something she has never experienced before coming from a dysfunctional family situation and Aged Care where her mother and the staff at Wallsend Aged Care did everything for her. For the first time in her life, Kim was now in control and living her life the way she wanted. Now Kim is going to University and looking after her pet cat named Sally.
